Are your students struggling to understand the difference between mood and tone? Or maybe you are introducing it for the first time, and want to keep it in their brains! This activity uses modern songs to make learning fun and relevant, and help content stick with students!

This activity utilizes six modern songs to engage students in mood and tone. The students will identify the mood based on the songs beat and rhythm, and then inspect the lyrics to find the tone. Best of all, this was designed to be used in several different ways (independent, guided practice, gallery walk, stations, task cards), so you can find the format that fits YOU! All six songs are linked to the product using QR codes that lead students to a school appropriate video with the song.

*Disclaimer: The lyrics to these songs are appropriate for older students. While most of the language and themes are mild, there are some innuendos and the use of “hell”. I do not recommend playing the songs for students at school before listening and reading the lyrics yourself. I do not own any of the lyrics to these songs. All artists who have rights to the song are cited.*
