How to use this handout:
In a lesson about mood and tone, this handout is a great help.
First, discuss SOUND, how when you ring a bell it creates ONE sound, or tone, and, depending on where a person is standing or if they are moving, people will feel differently when they hear it. ONE message (tone from the AUTHOR) and many feelings (MOOD achieved in the reader).
Second, have kids BOX the words that are the same in the 4 sample sentences, let them see how each sentence is about the SAME TWO THINGS: the weather and the future. BUT, the author changes TONE with her word choices, which, if she has chosen WISELY, will change the mood in the reader.
