PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The Phases of the Moon Mechanical Card is an engaging hands-way for students to learn information about the rotation and revolution of the Moon in preparation for learning to identify the phases of the moon. The completed card will put the "interactive" into your students' interactive notebooks. It moves!

Your students will be delighted by the mechanism. It works almost like a toy! When completed, this model operates with a pull-tab, causing each page to flip open one at a time. Each page contains information about the Moon’s revolution around earth, and its rotation on its own axis, illustrated with simple diagrams. It’s a perfect activity for your introduction to your study of the Moon.

The model will be something that students are proud of and want to keep! They’ll want to operate the card again and again and while doing that, they’ll be repeatedly reviewing the information about the Moon. The model can be used alone, or in combination with instruction in place of notes or textbook reading.

Please see the preview for a photograph of the completed model, as well as close up pictures of the explanations and illustrations. This product does not teach the names of the phases of the moon. Its purpose is to teach how the Moon’s revolution and rotation create the appearance of the moon changing.

This product contains two versions – one in color and one in black and white. It also includes tips for teachers and complete illustrated instructions for students. This is not a difficult model to make. There are no complicated measurements or strange folds. If a student can use scissors, can fold on straight dotted lines, and can follow instructions about where to put glue, they can make this model!

The materials you need are:

Scissors

Glue or two-sided tape. Two-sided tape is preferred. It’s less messy, with no waiting, and it can be repositioned.

Copies of the pattern pieces for students (2 pages per student). I STRONGLY recommend that you print the pieces on card stock. I cannot guarantee that the model will work as well or be as durable if printed on plain paper.

Copies of the instruction pages? (2) which can be printed double-sided.

Time required: Approx. 45 min. for students who are 12+ years old.
