This lesson plan begins with reading aloud the story "Kitten's First Full Moon" which can be found on youtube if the book is not available. Then the phases are described and a game can be played to ensure the information sticks. This is a very active and engaging lesson plan for all learners. While it is aligned to Kindergarten Missouri standards, it can be adapted for 1st or 2nd grades, as well.
DOK Level 1 (Recall) – The students will tell what they know about the moon.
DOK Level 2 (Skill/Concept) – The students will draw the moon phases.
DOK Level 3 (Strategic Thinking) – The students will differentiate between moon phases when asked.
DOK Level 4 (Extended Thinking) – The students will apply what they have learned by keeping a journal to track the moon.
