Use this Pdf and Digital resource to make learning about moon phases fun and easy! This story unit, followed by activities, presents information in a fun and appealing way for students. These letters written by Zog, the alien, back to his people on Zipton. explains all about the phases of the moon. You see, Zipton doesn't have a moon, so this is all very new to Zog! Oh! And ice cream, he learns about ice cream too!

Teachers will be able to edit the directions to customize the resource as needed. This resource has a set of letters for third graders, and a more simplified set for second graders. This is also true of the moon posters. There is a set for third, and a set for second. There is also a quiz for third graders. Teachers can simply go into the digital format and delete the set of letters and posters they do not need. If they need them later, they can be retrieved.



Two sets of letters are included, one for second grade, one for third.

Two sets of moon posters, one for second, one for third

The second grade reading level letters are written at a 2.7 readability level as determined by Okapi Readability. The letters teach second graders that the appearance of the moon changes slowly over time, and why. The same concepts for third grade are introduced, but without the vocabulary used with third graders.

The second set of letters is written for third graders. The reading level is 3.3 as determined by Okapi Readability. These letters cover the concepts of rotation of the earth, the moon's revolution around the earth, and moon phases using the terms waning and waxing.
