This Apollo 11 resource pack is a great companion to use with the Mentor Text, Moonshot by Brian Floca.
This historical fiction text chronicles the Apollo 11 space mission to the moon. Your students will enjoy learning about the first mission to the moon through reading and writing activities.
This Pack Includes:
Context Clues- Students will read 10 sentences that include 10 vocabulary words from text. They will use context clues to help determine the meaning of the underlined word, then write its definition. (Answer Key Included)
Figurative Language- Students will determine the meaning of a simile in the text and write 3 additional similes/metaphors about information they've learned in the text.
Vivid Verbs- Students will create a word splash of verbs they hear in the story, and then use 5 of these verbs to retell their favorite part of the text.
Passage: NASA’s Journey to the Moon- Students will read this passage for additional information about the Apollo 11 mission. They will use this passage as they complete three constructed response activities.
Passage: Did We Really Land on the Moon?- Students will read this passage for the perceptive that the Apollo missions may have been a hoax. They will use this passage as they complete one constructed response activity.
Conjunctions- Students will use FANBOYS to sequence the events of the Apollo 11 mission to the moon using concrete details and facts they've learned from these texts as well as other resources they have read.
Main Idea & Supporting Detail: (3 included)
There are three versions of this activity, one to complete with the Mentor Text, "Moonshot", and two that students will refer to the passages included in this pack, "NASA's Journey to the Moon" and "Did We Really Land on the Moon?" In all three, students will determine the main idea and supporting details and complete the graphic organizer.
Paired Texts- Students will respond to four prompts using the text and passages. (Answer Keys Included)
Assessment- 5 multiple choice and 3 short answer
Scaled Measurement Project- Students will use dimensions to create a scaled diagram of the Earth, Moon, and path the Apollo 11 crew may have taken in 1969.
Math Elapsed Time Task Cards (12 Cards)- Students will determine the answers and complete a recording sheet.
