The skill of recognizing and writing compound words is always introduced and developed in lower elementary grades with simple words like basketball, cupboard, and barnyard. Yet these are far too simple for our middle/high school students, who need to keep working with compound words, but at a higher vocabulary level.
This lesson introduces and provides practice with a set of twenty-three more compound words that most students in middle and high school probably do not know yet, challenging compound words like forerunner, harebrained, hinterland, and headstrong.
Students work independently with a dictionary or with teacher guidance to define these challenging compound words and then place them in a set of context sentences to demonstrate further mastery. Answers provided.
