MORE with MO WILLEMS
Centers and Writing Lessons
My students LOVE Mo Willems! They are intrigued with the pigeon character and all his wonderful friends! This unit uses books the children love to read. After listening to the various Mo Willems stories, the students can do MORE with Mo Willems!
Pgs. 6-7 Interactive Writing– On chart paper make a list Don’t Let The Pigeon Drive A…. Students can
complete a recording sheet and add a picture.
Pgs. 13-17 Speech Bubble Writing– Students can make the large pigeon craft and add a speech bubble.
Pgs. 8-12 Describe Character Traits– After reading many Mo Willems books, the students can complete a
graphic organizer describing each character.
Pgs. 18-23 Sight Word Games–
Memory– make two sets of Pigeon Sight Word Cards
Pocket Chart– Turn the cards backwards into a pocket chart. Students will turn a card over and read the word. If a student finds the bus card, the game starts over.
Pgs. 24-25 Pigeon Letter Mat– Turn a sight word card over and build the word using letters. Students can write the sight words on the recording sheet.
Pgs. 31-32 Magnifying Sight Words– Students can use magnifying glasses to find hidden sight words in the Piggy and Elephant picture. They will write down the sight words on a recording sheet.
Pgs. 33-36 Friends Emergent Reader– using the following sight words: WE, LIKE, ARE and TO
Pgs. 26-30 Hungry For Words– Students can stretch CVC words and match a picture.
Pgs. 37-41 Ten Frame Memory– Students can match number with ten frame card/
Ten Frame One More and/or One Less-Students will draw a number card from the pile, say the number and identify and build the number that is one more/less on the large ten frame mat.
Pgs. 42-47 Problem Solving with Addition and Subtraction- using cookie cereal manipulatives and recording
Pgs. 47-51 Around the Room Counting– Students can walk around the room a look for bus cards, count and write the number on the recording sheet.
Pgs. 55-57 Counting On with Hot Dogs-Students can state the given number and count on.
Pgs. 52-54 Puppy Love– Students can write the addition equation represented in the ten frame.

Pigeon Craft– Run patterns on cardstock paper. Students will trace, cut and assemble the pigeon craft. Don’t forget to add a speech bubble!
Pg. 64 Pigeon Bus Snack– Students can make a bus snack while reviewing shapes and following directions using Boehm concepts.
Pgs. 58-63 Sort Needs and Wants– Students can discuss and sort the needs and wants cards. Then use therecording sheet to show their thinking.
