Why: I began starting the day with a morning meeting this year to help build classroom community and as a way to open our morning on a positive note. My class LOVED it! In the first few weeks of school a lot of students did not know each other and this sure changed that! It also helped some of my more reserved students open up.
How: In the morning we come in and sit in a circle on the floor. We have also done our meeting from our desks. We start with a greeting and go around the room. I usually draw a name card or choose a student who is displaying exceptional behavior to select who starts us. After the greeting we do a share card. I will sometimes create or use a specific share that will be related to what we will be working on or for an event of the day. During opinion writing it really helped to talk about certain ideas and for the class to hear each other’s reasons. We wrote about our favorite restaurant (and had that be the share of the day) and students were really able to grow ideas from our meeting! We close our meeting with announcements of the day and a preview of the daily schedule. I can honestly say that starting the day like this made a positive impact.
