Morning work is an important part of the morning routine for many first grade classrooms. "Morning Work That Matters" was created to allow reading, writing, spelling, sentence structure, and math concepts to be a part of the morning routine. When creating this product, I was thinking of my own first grade classroom and what I would want my kids to be working on during their morning routine that would be meaningful, not just busy work. Each student page in this packet follows the same basic format: sight word practice, sentence practice, and math concepts. I have found that keeping the format consist on each page is helpful for my students. They are able to complete the page more independently which also increases their confidence. The following concepts are addressed in "Morning Work That Matters:"
*Sight word practice
*Addition fact practice
*Subtraction Fact Practice
I have used this product in my own classroom and my students very much enjoyed their morning work as part of their morning routine. My students became more confident in their skills as they learned to complete their page independently due to the consistent format each day. I found this to be especially helpful for my students with special needs and those students who lacked confidence in their academic ability in the areas of reading, writing, or math. When I first started using "Morning Work That Matters" with my first graders we completed the sentence part together until I felt that my students were ready to tackle it on their own. The sentence portion of each page allowed my students to work on creating complete sentences as well as spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. I used these pages a few days each week with my first graders and was thrilled to see the progress that they made with their skills as well as their confidence.
