The “You Are My Sunshine Sunflower Packet” is super-versatile.
There are two writing prompt "craftivities" in the packet, with lots of options for each.
For the large sunflower activity, you pick the one that’s appropriate for your kiddos, or give them a choice.
I designed the coloring aspect to be for little ones, as well as a pattern for older elementary students.
The simpler illustration doesn’t have leaves or stems.
I thought you might like to have children create their own, or pick a partner and take turns tracing each others hand on a folded sheet of green paper.
Have older students choose a writing prompt-framed worksheet, (there are 4) and tell why their mom brings sunshine to their life.
Another writing prompt worksheet option is a coloring page.
If you’ve worked on “describing words” and learned about adjectives, students could also write an adjective that describes their mom on each petal and include this with their card.
For discussion, ask students what “You are my sunshine”, or “you bring sunshine to my life” means.
A teachable moment can be grabbed to discuss metaphor and simile if you like.
As an extra-special surprise for mom, have this be a “Singing Telegram” card, and teach your kiddos to sing the chorus to "You Are My Sunshine."
I’ve included templates for a mother and grandparents, as well as a generic “ ‘You’ bring sunshine to my life”, so you can use these activities for another occasion, or for a child without a mom.
The accordion-folded “My love for you grows, and grows, and grows!” is a personal favorite.
The packet includes:
* 4 triple sunflower topper templates
* 2 flower pot templates
* 3 “stem” templates
* 11-on-a-page circles, for the center of the sunflower's “hinged flap”, this flips open to reveal the “Happy Mother’s Day!” greeting.
* 6-on-a page “You are my sunshine” hearts
* 6 large sunflower options
* 12 writing prompt worksheet options
* A completed sample, so you can easily make one to share with your students, to help explain what you want them to do, plus
* Detailed directions, samples and photographs.
I’m Diane from Teach With Me, wishing you a wonderful Mother’s Day. I hope your students enjoy spreading a little sunshine of their own!
