There are Mother's Day resources aplenty for younger students, but what about the big kids?! Here is everything you need to help your older students write a BEAUTIFUL and MEANINGFUL poem for Mother's Day. The non-rhyming, metaphor rich, completely personalized poem is one that mothers will LOVE to receive! Plus, the entire resource is customizable for students who need/want to write the poem for a grandmother, aunt, or guardian.
This resource includes ALL of the following:
- 4-day lesson plan for the teacher (you can condense this into fewer days if you need to) (2 pages total)
- a sample poem (2 pages total - 1 in black and white for copying, 1 in color for the lesson)
- poem planning/graphic organizer (4 pages total - 2 pages with 'Mom' in the directions OR 2 identical pages with fill-in blanks for students who refer to their mothers by different names, or who need to/would like to make the poem for someone other than their mothers)
-poem rough draft writing template (6 pages total - 2 different length options, both with choice of 'Mom' already written in OR fill-in the name style); the template is easy to use and will take students through step-by-step!
-poem final draft writing paper (18 pages total - 3 different graphic design styles each in 4 different lengths so students can customize the lengths of their poems: single page 4-stanza poem w/stanza spacing...2-page 7-stanza poem w/stanza spacing...single page poem w/o stanza spacing...2-page poem w/o stanza spacing)
This is an original lesson plan that I created to use with my 4th grade students when I taught in the classroom. It was a S-T-R-E-T-C-H for them to write poems like these, but they were SO proud of their poems once they were completed! After Mother's Day they would always tell me, "My mom cried when she read it!" and I'd even get hugs or notes from many of the mothers, thanking me for helping their children to write such special Mother's Day poems!
Adapting for older ages/abilities:
I used this resource for 4th grade students. This resource can DEFINITELY be adapted for use with much older students in middle through high school. What will change is the sophistication and depth of the language and the images used in the poems.
The entire resource is customizable so you can use this with ALL of your students, including those who need to or would like to write the poem for someone other than their mothers.
Home Educators: Since the entire resource is customizable, this is the perfect project to make for gifting to grandmothers for Mother's Day, too! They will LOVE to receive these.
