Each hand motion features a characteristic that makes that state unique or distinctive. You will begin your motion adventure in Maine and conclude your journey in Alaska, learning all fifty states regionally from east to west. Along the way, there are interesting facts to learn about each state. Students are active participants, using three of the five senses. The motions are a memory trigger for interesting facts. It it similar to a mnemonic device and great for kinesthetic learners. It can be used at the beginning or end of class as a warm up or closing activity, used individually by a student, or incorporated into a curriculum unit. Put all the motions together and have a contest to see how fast students can perform all the hand motions in order. Use it to quiz students about interesting facts. The hand motions are a combination of creativity, American Sign Language, and American Indian Sign Language. It's unique, repetitive, systematic and fun!
