There were some years that I had students that had difficulties participating in class. In other years, I couldn’t keep them quiet enough. I thought of how I could get students motivated to participate as well as control the students that dominated the discussions. I came up with the idea of using these 3 fish tickets. This is a great way to get students to participate as well as control those students that like to keep “talking and talking.” In addition, I really want the students to be able to self-monitor themselves and see if they do participate or not.
Every student has 3 fish tickets, each a different color (i.e. red, blue, and green). You could designate each color for different subject areas like green for Language Arts, red for math and green for science or social studies. It’s really up to you or you could just keep it to 1 color and he/she has to just participate 3 times throughout the school day.
Every time a student participates, he/she will put a fish ticket in their cup on their desk or designated spot. If a students uses all 3 fish tickets, they can no longer participate (This is for my students that want to keep talking and talking). This will help them self-monitor themselves and choose wisely when to participate. At the end of the day, if the students use all their fish tickets, they will get a “Hooray” note attached in their planner and a positive reward* (I use behavior money system in my class and they earn 5 cents)
If some students don't use all 3 fish tickets, encourage them to try again the next day. This is definitely a way that students will hold themselves accountable and check if they participated in class.
*positive reward can be anything that you already have in place in your classroom-tickets, points, coins, etc., it’s really up to you.
I included a black and white copy to save on ink and you can easily use it with colored paper.
I hope this will be beneficial for you and thank you for taking the time to check out my products. Aloha!
