Motivation is the answer to the question “Why we do what we do?”. The motivation theories try to figure out what the “M” is in the equation: “M motivates P” (Motivator motivates the Person). In a classroom setting, motivation is the key that could drive a student’s interest or indifference in any learning activity. Motivation helps students find the desire or need to learn or do a task. It engages their interest not just making students try harder. Important as it is, motivation has long been a major problem for most language teachers not only in Thailand but also elsewhere around the world.
This chapter will talk about:
1. What is motivation?
2. What are the types of motivation?
3. What are the different theories of motivation?
4. How do students see motivation from their point of view?
5. How can teachers motivate students?
