I teach high school chemistry and physics. When I needed an academically based reward and motivational system for my classroom, I found nothing that met my needs. I don't want anything based on food or candy, bonus points, or prizes. What to do?
Three years later, I've got a rewards card and system that costs next to nothing, motivates even my most difficult students, and is seriously easy to manage. Students are rewarded for doing good work in class. It works with all levels of students (mine are pre-ap chemistry and physics and on-level physics). You can't ask for more than that. My school has a grading policy that is 70% tests and 30% other so performance is everything. I give lots of grades so these cards, which allow students to drop a daily grade for ten punches and a quiz (which is 1/4 of a test grade) have little impact on their averages but a huge impact on their attitudes.
Included are teacher instructions and two types of reward cards - one in black and white to be printed on colored card stock, the second on white card stock if you are lucky enough to have access to a color printer. The only other thing you need is a special hole punch. You can get these at hobby stores or order them online in all sort of shapes.
