Many European countries competed for North America. This interactive notebook activity is designed to teach students the motivations for exploration.
My students and I pretend that we have discovered a sunken ship carrying artifacts that might help us figure out the motivations for the explorations. Students receive a picture of a ship along with three “artifacts.” The artifacts are a bar of gold, a Bible, and a trophy. Each artifact represents a different motivation for exploration. (Notes for what each artifact represents are included.)
I included blank templates as well so students can draw their own pictures. You could also use the blank templates to teach the obstacles to the explorations and/or the accomplishments of the explorations.
