Words sorts are very important in helping children to learn how to read. They may also be used for RTI since they are researched based. This unit contains several activities for the long a chunks: ail, ay, and ain.
The first activity is one called Mousetrap which can be played in a reading group or later in a word work station. The children will take turns reading the card correctly. If they get the word MOUSETRAP they lose all of their cards. The child with the most cards at the end of the game is the best Mouse Catcher!
The second activity involves sorting the words into ail, ay, or ain words and being able to tell why they placed their word under that chunk. A cut and paste paper has been provided to follow up on the children's learning of this skill. It can be done independently or at a word work station.
The third activity is a sentence writing activity page for each of the three chunks: ail, ay, and ain. The children will write a sentence for each word. There are three separate papers provided.
The fourth activity has three separate game boards for ail, ay, and ain. The children will roll a die and read the word. There is a fourth game board that provides practice with all 3 of them (ail, ay, and ain) together.
These words could later, as a follow up activity, become spelling words for the reading group or the whole class. This would help to provide additional support with the mastery of the ail, ay, and ain chunks.
