These words are posted on a bulletin board in my general music classroom and are used like a word wall. In this set, the word are separated by locomotor, non-locomotor, and words that could be considered locomotor or non-locomotor. We use them as inspiration as we decide how we want to add movement to our songs and games. These could also be used as flash cards if the teacher so desires.

I love using these words as a reference as we learn songs, improvise, and more! Check out how I use these words in my classroom at this link.

Two vocab words that aren’t self-explanatory are “levels” and “the flush.” Levels means the height of the student (high, medium, low) and encourages them to use their levels as they move through the space. “The Flush” refers to the circular motion that all students tend to do when they’re asked to move or dance in a large group. For some reason class after class rotates in a large “flushing” action. It takes too much time to say “don’t just make circles around the room,” or “make sure you’re not all just rotating.” Instead I say, “nobody want to see a bunch of kids look like a toilet flush,” and after that all I have to say is “you’re flushing!” and they get it and move in different pathways.

Please email me if you come up with new word that you'd like to have added to the set and I'll type them up for you. I'm always happy to expand this resource so that all teachers have more resources and imaginative words to use when teaching. Thanks to the folks who have already emailed me with words they'd like. The set has gone from 40 words (when it was originally published) to now 60 movement words! I've included a set of blank cards so you can add any new words “in the moment” that you want and don’t see in this set! Email MakeMomentsMatter@gmail.com with word suggestions!
