This 40-question movie guide with answer key focuses on the Qin Dynasty and the rise of its first Emperor, Shi Huangdi. This dynasty was known for the unification of China, the beginning of the construction of the Great Wall, and of the practice of Legalist ideology which was totalitarian in its application. It was designed for the 2006 docudrama First Emperor: The Man Who Made China.
It is suitable for middle and high school students, although there are scenes of violence associated with war and suppression of liberties. The only necessary requirements are to have the movie ready and distribute the Q & A to the students. I also pause the movie every 10 minutes or so, just to make sure the the students have the answers to the questions. Some of the points that my students have taken away are that while it is based on the historical evidence, it combines the interest with engineering projects that were part of the ancient period and a drama looking into the psyche of Shi Huang Di. The film runs 1 hour and 40 minutes, so it will take several days on a 45 minutes schedule.
