This movie guide focuses on the 1937 Japanese invasion of China, historically known as 'The Rape of Nanking' just prior to the outbreak of World War II. This event is known for its human rights violations during wartime. This product allows for the guided analysis and examination of a documentary that illustrated this event with multiple, varied sources.
WARNING: the teacher needs to view the documentary first to gauge the appropriateness for students. Sexual violence is discussed in frank terms here, in many cases from surviving victims themselves. In addition, war crimes activities are viewed, discussed, and analyzed, not for the sake of being gratuitous, but for the cause of maintaining historical integrity.
I have done this lesson for five years now, and it has proven to be worth the effort every year for my students. This lesson has a particularly strong, visceral impact on my students.
