This is a movie guide for the movie The Mission/ La Misión in Spanish. There are 27 thought-provoking free response questions that encourage students to think about the politics and conflicts of the time. The movie is about the transfer of the missions in Guaraní territory from Spanish to Portuguese control and the role of the Catholic Church in that decision. It is an excellent (award winning) film that adeptly shows the varying views of different groups and the resulting conflicts of interest. This activity has worked well in my AP Spanish Language classes and I have now added a few more questions that relate directly to the Global Challenges theme for the AP Spanish Language and Culture exam. The economic, political, religious and environmental themes lead the movie and this guide to be perfect for AP Spanish Language and Culture classes studying the Global challenges theme, but other upper-level classes could also enjoy it. I have included a full answer key to all questions except those asking for an opinion.
The movie is available free on-line at both of these sites and can be streamed or downloaded.
