It’s time to journey to Hollywood! Whether your students wish to make the next summer blockbuster or an indy art flick, they will wear a number of hats as a movie producer. It will be important to make wise choices and have a degree of luck to make their films a smashing success… or a box office flop.
Turn your Algebra 2 or Pre-Calculus into Hollywood think-tank and call the shots for a major motion picture in this 21st Century Math Project.
In this 19 page document you will be given a mapping to the Content Standards, an outline for how to implement the project, and handout resources for students to use. Please note an answer key is not included because the numbers will all be the result of student choice. In all it is four different assignments --
-- In “The Pitch” students will create a pitch with a movie title, a genre and a logline (this could be a nice weekend homework assignment). A logline is a one or two sentence summary of a movie that is often used to create interest in an idea.
Students will pitch their ideas to the class and you will determine your greenlight costs. The better the pitch, the lower it will cost to greenlight your project (Either $100,000, $250,000, $500,000). If you do not have a pitch, your greenlight costs will be $1,000,000. This responsibility can be delegated to students!
-- In “Pre-Production” students will make many decisions about your film including talent, special effects and directors. All of these costs will be determined by power functions and the luck of a die. Students will total the costs with their greenlight costs to finalize their initial costs.
-- In “Marketing Plan” students will make decision about the marketing of their film in hopes of maximizing their profit. These decisions will be an ongoing cost. Between this total and the “Pre-Production” total, students will have both components of linear equation for cost.
-- In “Box Office Sales” power functions will be provided to determine the revenue created from the student’s “Pre-Production” and “Marketing Plan” decisions. Students will find values that will be used as the coefficients of a single power function that will model the revenue. In the film world, the majority of the box office is made in the first three weeks so you have 21 days to break-even, can they do it?
-- Optional “Change of Plans” – The reviews have come in and it will dramatically affect the box office! Students will create a new power function based on a CHANGE OF PLANS transformation. I have included a page of 12 transformations. You may need 2 or 3 copies of this for your class. You should separate the positive ones (the first three rows) from the negative ones (bottom three rows) and put them into different boxes.
The change of plans can be determined based on the quality of the student’s work up to this point. Students will then need find a new break-even point.
