"The Free State of Jones" is severely underrated as an educational tool to show students what lives were like for Blacks during the Reconstruction Era. I work in an international school and showed it to my foreign students, many of whom have never been to America. It was a sobering experience for them as they were shocked by the treatment of African Americans even after the abolition of slavery.
There are two sets of movie questions. The multiple choice was designed for my students with lower English proficiency and includes an answer key. The free response, designed for my upper-level English speakers, does not include an answer key as student responses may vary. I asked that they read the questions before watching the film so they would know what to pay particular attention to during the viewing.
