Reading Standard 7 asks our students to compare content presented in two different mediums and film adaptations of texts offer a great opportunity for our students to practice this standard in English class. Venn Diagrams and other simple comparison/contrast graphic organizers do not give the students enough direction, though. Instead of analyzing the differences, the simple organizers encourage lists of the similarities and differences. This chart directs students to look at the film through the eyes of the filmmaker and to notice how the filmmaker’s additions, changes, and deletions contribute to their understanding of the story.
You can edit this worksheet to adapt it to your specific needs or to a specific text. It’s created in PowerPoint, but will print on a standard sheet of letter-sized paper.
