This unit is a great resources for teaching students about Westward Expansion. There is an interactive student handbook and then a handout packet. It has separate simulation cards and a complete unit PowerPoint with all simulations included.
Suggestions: Make a class set of the handbooks as a reference that way you have one set each year prepared for use.
There are several spots to pause and think whether it is turn and talk or quick write it is a way to get students looking closely at text and analyzing whet is important. This is the close reading part of the lessons. There are nonfiction segments but also diary entries of one girl as she journeys along the trail. These are all written by me. If you see something you would like added or modified please send me a request.
The simulation itself is loosely based on online simulations I have seen throughout the years. I have modified and cut down sections to mimic what I think were important landmarks, not that they all are not important. I have added dice to change situations as well. This is a well researched unit and all resources used are listed. My students loved doing this unit each year. I hope your students enjoy it too.
