Over the years, students have cited my Shakespeare unit as their favorite time of seventh grade. One year, they made me a memory book, and 95% of the memories stemmed from this unit. It teaches thoroughly, reduces intimidation, and encourages students to enjoy the bard. This unit does refer to the 1932 video of the play (available on amazon), and I also use the The New Cambridge Shakespeare Company cd recording (available on amazon) to play audio while students read. Costumes are optional, but they enhance the experience.
This is a comprehensive unit (40+ pages) for A Midsummer Night's Dream, and the only one you'll ever need. If you're looking for a fresh approach, or have never taught the play, please indulge yourself and your students with this unit.
