Included in this download are thirteen poems that cover seasonal topics such as pumpkins, Grandparent's Day, fire safety, and Thanksgiving. For those of you who are just getting your journals started with this series, I've included my teaching plan, and the parent note that I send home in the front of each journal. I started working with a poetry journal this year to meet some specific Common Core objectives. For example, with this piece, students will code the text with crayon to find sight words, rhyming words, nouns and verbs. The poems are not all specific to first grade, so, you'll get an opportunity to expose the students to more complex text while you support their reading through reading aloud, echo reading or chorally reading the material to them or with them. They will become more fluent and have a wonderful opportunity to develop both fluency and phrasing. My students really enjoy our journal time! I trust that yours will as well! :)
