As a remedial reading teacher, I often find it difficult to locate engaging lessons for students in the intermediate grades. With the implementation of the new Common Core Learning Standards, our job has become even harder. We need to create thinkers with students who struggle to comprehend. This lesson is aligned to the CCLS and requires students to think while they read, and then in turn apply that thinking to understand the theme or message behind the story. This lesson also includes writing about reading, a critical part of the balanced literacy approach.
Included in this lesson are the graphic organizers which are used for the book, but could also be carried out for any book you and your students may read. A rubric for the written response is also included.
