Story Shorts are my original fiction texts written to appeal to struggling middle school readers. The same story is provided in multiple reading levels (Guided Reading Levels: J – K, L – M, N – O) to allow every student in the class to read and participate in discussions with the same text.
As a teacher, you can also choose to use the Story Shorts for:
Guided Reading groups within the Reader’s Workshop framework
Reading partnerships and Book Talks
Whole class reading strategies/skills instruction

Every student in the class is able to read the same text at a level that is accessible to them. This allows the teacher the flexibility to group students outside the bounds of reading levels or do whole class instruction in a specific reading strategy or skill.

I have provided activities for the four parts of this story, but feel free to teach additional reading strategies and skills as needed for your particular students.

Analyze how particular elements of a story or drama interact (e.g., how setting shapes the characters or plot).
Describe how a particular story’s or drama’s plot unfolds in a series of episodes as well as how the characters respond or change as the plot moves toward a resolution.
