Overview (provided in Word Doc in zip folder):
Before becoming caught up in the question of defining multi-genre, you need to have a clear understanding of what genre means. Simply put, a genre is a category created based on its component parts. Written genres are often defined by the writing style, the form, and/or the content.
Most people are familiar with broad genre classifications of literature: fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Within these genres are sub-categories; think about familiar ones like detective stories, romance novels, fantasy epics, and biographies. The list of fiction's sub-categories is quite lengthy. Even some of those can be broken down further. The narrower you can make a genre definition, the easier it will be to determine if a piece of writing belongs in that class or not.
For the purpose of this assignment, you will need to consider all genres. Not only will you be able to analyze and write a fairytale or comic strip, but you will also have the freedom to choose resumes, top-ten lists, or wanted posters. Your task is determining which genres are best suited to presenting the theme of a book. Using a variety of genres allows you to reach a wider range of readers and explore a text more deeply.
So, when you see the term 'multi-genre' being used in relation to this assignment, it means only that multiple genres are being used to convey a single message (theme). Specifically, this project requires the presentation of five different genres by creating a unique artifact for each.
