This unit is AMAZING. I began teaching this unit two years ago and it has grown into a unit that all of my students enjoy, even the ones that tend to hate writing. The first week of the semester, I give my students an explanation on what the multi genre unit it and how it will be used throughout the semester. Students must choose ONE topic of their choosing (it can be anything they want from their favorite hobby to a relationship). Then every Friday for the rest of the semester, we do a different type of writing that has to do with their topic. We do things such as black out poetry, six word memoirs, wanted posters, obituaries, etc. All together they must do 15 different genres. Then at the end of the semester, students have to find a unique way to put their projects together. They get very creative with it and I have seen things such as scrapbooks, writings shoved in a basketball, a paper mache eye, a time capsule, and a guitar case. The way they present it just has to do with their topic. This gives students the opportunity to explore many types of writing while we also work on other units during the semester. Often times, my students can't wait until Friday so they can write things of their choosing. They forget it is even a class assignment. You will not regret using this unit in your classroom! I included expectations, explainations, and a rubric in this unit.
