Writing a multi-paragraph essay can be difficult for students to do. This format gives students support in writing an essay that contains an introduction paragraph, 3 supporting paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph. This format is simple to use, giving students a label and space to put each type of sentence along with space to brainstorm on each page for a pre-writing step. Additionally, the introduction page has a space for an attention getter along with ideas of what that could be, transition word ideas on the 3 support paragraph pages, and a wrap it up line on the conclusion paragraph page. The words “thesis statement” is also included on the introduction and conclusion pages.
I use this format to help students visually see what all the parts of a paper should be and within that what all the parts of a paragraph should be. After they get done filling this format out, it is easy for them to type it into the correct essay format to hand in. My students have commented how simple it is to use and how it helps them not forget parts. I have used it with several different types of essays including persuasive, historical, and memoirs so the possibilities of essays that can use this same formal are endless.
In addition, the forms have 2 copies – one is greyscale and the other is color coded. This gives you option to give more or less visual support.
