Despite a student’s age, it is important that letter names and sounds are pronounced correctly. This means reviewing the pronunciation of consonant sounds.

Students need to understand the word “consonant” as they would a vocabulary word. This is often neglected in favor of the word “vowel.”

Whenever teaching sounds, it is important to mention what the teeth, tongue, and lips should be doing. This is especially true of vowel sounds. In my experience, those who have difficulty using the tongue correctly to form vowel sounds need watching.

Using a mirror to check for correct sound formation is helpful and fun.

Using hand signals paired with vowel sounds is helpful and fun.
