This activity has students set two different functions equal to each other and solve the resulting multi-step equation.
Students physically substitute different functions into the equation f(x)=g(x)* to create multiple kinds of equations to solve (variables on both sides, equations with no solutions, combining like terms, distributive property, and proportions). This download includes: 6 function cards, 15 question cards, instruction sheet, answer key, and student work page.
I had students work in groups of 4 - each student had his or her own work page, and each group had a complete set of function and question cards. I would recommend printing the cards on colored paper and laminating so they can be used multiple times!
*This activity was originally designed for TN standard: "Solve the linear equation f(x) = g(x)," but this will make a good practice activity for any students who are working on solving multi-step equations.
