Sketch Notes and Activities to help any student solve multi step equations that include distributive property and combining like terms. Contents include:
Pg. 3-4 Sketch notes for multi step equations and filled in notes.
Pg. 5-6 Partner practice with two step equations and answer key.
Pg. 7-8 Distributive Property Sketch notes and filled in notes.
Pg. 9-14 Multi-Step Equation Practice cards using the dist. Property.
Run these on colored cardstock front/back so that the
answers are on the back of each card. Students work a
problem together and then check the answer on the back.
I run each set in a different color cardstock so that I can
easily sort them if they get mixed up.
Pg. 15 Combining Like Terms introductory activity. Take these
terms, run a set for each group and cut them apart. Place
in a baggie. Give each group a baggie and have them
attempt to sort them into like groups. They struggle at
first, but eventually grasp the concept of “like terms”.
There will be four groups, so sometimes I give each group
four pieces of colored paper to sort them on. After a few
minutes, I show the correct groups on the board.
Pg. 16-17 Combining Like Terms Sketch Notes and filled in notes.
Pg. 18-19 Combining Like Terms visual organizer practice activity.
Going back to the terms sorted in the introductory activity,
students write each set in a box on the visual organizer.
Working together or as a whole class, combine the like
terms and write the answer in the starburst.
Pg. 20-21 Four corners practice activity. I give each student a slip
and allow time to work independently to solve. When time
is up, students gather in the four corners of the room
according to their icon at the top of the slip. They check
their work together and identify mistakes.
Pg. 22-23 Worked out four corners activity.
