This resource guides students through an independent reading and study of a novel set outside their own culture. The student-choice aspect of the assignment allows a multicultural class the opportunity to select books that will individually challenge their stereotypes and expand their understanding of others. The recommended timeframe for this project is anywhere from 1-2 months depending on how much class time you wish to devote. Students can also complete this project entirely outside of class.
The resource includes a list of almost 60 multicultural novel suggestions for high school aged students, assignments arranged into two categories: Literary elements and Multicultural Experience. Each category allow students to choose from five, detailed tasks (some with examples). Rubrics for each category are also included.
Additionally, the resource includes an extension activity to encourage student blogging.
The Word file can be edited to suit your classroom needs and to allow for differentiation. or it can be printed and used immediately. It contains everything you and your students need to expand their cultural horizons and improve reading and writing skills.
