This is a multimodal essay that I use with my English II students. Multimodal just means that this assignment requires students to compose using language AND several nontraditional modes of communication as well, such as movie clips, audio, and images.
→ The assignment specifies that students have to create or modify these elements, and they must embed and contextualize them in their writing. Do note that I have included links to online resources in the prompt that students can use to accomplish these tasks. Ultimately, it was easy for my students to insert images and include hyperlinks to videos both in Microsoft Word and Google Docs.
→ While this is a creative take on the traditional essay, it is also a very practical, argumentative assignment. Students must select a current social/cultural problem (domestic violence, police brutality, racism, etc.) and argue how that problem can be practically solved. They must write in MLA format, perform research, include a thesis, topic sentences, cited textual support, developed paragraphs, a Works Cited page, etc. When finished, I had each of my students present their digital essays to the class.
✔ Simply put, this is a solid assignment that allows students to write persuasively (something the Common Core endorses) while being extremely creative. You can easily customize it to fit your own classroom goals. You will see in the preview that I have created a very detailed assignment with clear requirements, expectations, and resources.
