This Common Core State Standards Multiple Meaning Words Jokes and Riddles Differentiated Task is appropriate for 6th-8th grade, but could be used as low as 4th and 5th grade depending on the academic levels of students. This set addresses Language Common Core State Standard L.6.4.b. Tasks include multiple meaning (homographic) words practice for below, on, and above level learners, making the curriculum both accessible and challenging for all.
Students are asked to complete tasks by creating their own jokes or riddles using multiple meaning words (homographs). The below level task includes fill-in-the-blank scaffolded practice with homographic jokes and riddles, while the on level task includes the same scaffolded items in addition to create-your-own joke or riddle practice. The above level task contains more rigorous practice as learners are asked to create homographic jokes or riddles without scaffolded support. Copying below level and on level tasks back to back (and on level and above level tasks back to back) for students allows them to take control of their own learning and choose their own level of rigor, as well as gives students the opportunity to create while exercising critical thinking skills. Differentiated tasks allow students to take formative assessment to another level.
