This PDF file is a great way to introduce or practice using context clues to determine the meaning of multiple meaning words using dictionary entries. On the first page, students are introduced to context clues and the fact that they must use clues from the text combined with what they already know to determine word meaning.
Students are then shown a passage where they must determine the meaning of nonsense words using context clues. This provides a great discussion opportunity where students must provide text evidence for their reasoning!
The next several pages give students a sentence with a multiple meaning word in it, a dictionary entry for that word, and a multiple choice format for students to respond (as they would find on a standardized test!).
Project this file for whole group learning or review. Have students use whiteboards to write their responses to each question for a quick formative assessment.
