This lesson allows students to examine the different perspectives of American settlement of the West. This lesson includes a lesson plan, a warm-up, a learning activity and three different options for assessment. In the learning activity each student will take the view-point of either a Native American or an American settler and decide how to protect their interests, tribe or family. The activity is balanced so that both the settler's and the Native Americans view-points are examined. The lesson encourages students to think critically and evaluate how people's decisions affect others. Furthermore, the lesson allows for students to interact with one another and learn cooperatively.
