This is an interactive Microsoft Excel tool to develop chunking or syllabication strategies for multiple syllable words. The tool has a database of over 4600 words.
The Preview file provides full interaction for six word patterns within the open vowel category. There are four major categories for syllabication strategies that are represented by breakfast food symbolism.
Open vowel: donuts (do nut ri ver)
Closed vowel: muffins (muf fin bam boo)
Silent "e": grapefruit (grape fruit eye sight)
Rule of "le": maple syrup (ma ple sad dle)
The student selects the skill to practice (donuts, corn muffins, double double chocolate muffins, etc...) to display the associated interactive page.
The student clicks on arrows to cut the word into syllables.
The student may click on an icon to hear the word pronounced by Excel's built-in Text to Speech function.
The student may click on an icon that displays the word in Wordsymth's free online dictionary for pronunciation and other word study skills such as definition, inflections, synonyms, etc.... The student may click on an icon to develop fluency by trying to beat the computer in saying 15 words. The student may control the timing pause from 0 - 5 seconds.
The student may click the Shuffle button to present an entire new display of words.
The student may print the worksheet of 75 words with the option of including an answer key.
The student and/or teacher may incorporate their own word lists by clicking on "Create My Own Lists".
Special Note: Currently, TpT does not support uploading an Excel macro-enabled file. Therefore, the file is in ZIP format. Depending on your Excel's security setting, you may be prompted to enable the macro before the application will function.
