Whack-a-Multiple is an activity that helps students become more fluent in identifying multiples of numbers while adding an element of strategic play. Engage learners with this activity in small groups or as part of a math center. This activity can help to address/review CCSS 4.OA.4: gain familiarity with factors and multiples.
There are two different versions of the gameboard. One set focuses on the multiples of basic facts (gopher with the yellow hat); the other set focuses on multiples up to/including 100 that requires students to have some understanding of the divisibility rules and the ability to do mental math (gopher with the green hat). There are four different gameboards for each set so that there is some variety as to what multiples can be found on each gameboard. A blank gameboard also is included for students to add multiples based on their own readiness levels. A divisibility chart is included as well.
The nature of this game allows students to play multiple rounds using the same gameboard. The outcome of the game relies on what target numbers are rolled and the strategy behind which multiples get “whacked.” Will the students be able to “whack” all the multiples before they get “whacked” out of the game? Game on!
