This product relates to repeated addition and arrays in order for students to visualize multiplication.
PowerPoint Presentation (24 Slides) contains:
- Illustration and explanation of arrays (rows and columns)
- How we read the arrays
- What is repeated addition and how it is written (2 + 2 + 2 = 3 lots of 2 = 2 x 3), i.e 2 repeated 3 times.
- Whole class activity on describing an array on their whiteboards
There are 3 sets of worksheets to consolidate learning:-
Activity 1 (2 pages) - Students write repeated additions for the arrays shown.
Children that require support with the activities can write one repeated addition e.g. 2 + 2 + 2 whereas a more able student will be able to write two addition models: 2 + 2 + 2 and 3 + 3.
Activity 2 (2 pages) - (Extension) Same as above but the arrays are larger.
There is a small section on the worksheets where it asks students to show 3 lots of 4 and then circle the groups.
Activity 3 (8 pages)- Cut and Paste activity - The activity involves students cutting out buttons and arranging them in an array according to what is asked in the boxes: e.g. 5 x 2, so the student cuts out 2 lots of 5 buttons (10) and form them in an array, e.g. 5 buttons in a row and 2 columns.
Opportunity for Extension for more able students: On Activity Sheets 1 and 2 - The students can write the multiplication number sentence inside the box below their repeated additions- 2 + 2 + 2
2 X 3 = 6
3 + 3
3 X 2 = 6
To know that multiplication is related to repeated addition
To learn that arrays arranged in rows and columns helps us to work out a multiplication sums.
