This is a hands on, fun math centers activity that practices and reviews multiplication tables facts. The children have to know their math facts in order to crack the secret code. There are 2 ways to play this game. The first set of differentiated cards have multiplication problems that have to be answered correctly in order to spell out the secret message. The second way to play is that the kids have to create a multiplication fact to match the letters of the alphabet in order to create a math code for the message they are given. They can then share their code with partners so that thee partners then have to crack their created code, using the code sheets. Simply copy, laminate and cut the cards. The answers are provided on grey scale sheets to save ink.
It is designed with 3rd and 4th graders in mind. I have used this successfully with my advanced math groups and my more challenged math students. The kids love to work together, independently and in guided groups to crack the code!
2 color alphabet code cards to be de-coded and 1 in black and white
36 differentiated equation cards ( purple is less challenging than yellow)
20 phrase cards to be coded with equations
Worksheets to show kids’ rationale and their practice strategies
Use this a guided group work, centers activities or simple additional fun practice.
