I made this product to help my third grade students dig deeper into word problems. Many of my students would see a problem, only look at the numbers, and decide to multiply or divide based only on whether or not they saw a “big number.” While many of my students could solve the problem correctly with this method, it didn’t set them up for success in future grades that work with multi-digit numbers.
This lesson asks students to really think about what the word problem is saying and what each part means. It forced my students to slow down to think about what are the groups, what are the objects, and whether or not they would know the total. These questions do not contain any numbers because I wanted to remove the number cues to assess my students’ comprehension of the word problem. All of the problems have variables instead of numbers.
This product includes examples and slides for instruction as well as several printable practice worksheets.
The file includes both a powerpoint format and a pdf format for crisper printing.
