Ghost Hunting is a multiplication fact review activity that is designed to help students improve their fluency with multiplication facts. The activity is designed to have students see how quickly they are able to solve all of the basic multiplication facts in a given fact family.
There is some prep work that needs to be done for this activity. Each activity board requires 12 markers that are labeled with the multiplication fact. I use soda bottle caps and round sticker labels. Each cap is labeled with a sticker and I write the fact on the sticker. You will need 132 soda caps for the complete set. Label and place the caps in their own container.
With a partner, a stopwatch, and the appropriate set of caps, students will race against time (and their partners) to see how quickly they can “hunt” the ghosts by covering the correct product with the corresponding multiplication fact. One students will cover the ghosts while the other student uses the timer to see how quickly the student completes the activity.
The multiplication facts for families 2-12 are represented, allowing students to achieve the CCSS and VA SOL goal of having students become fluent in all multiplication facts by the end of third grade.
