Don’t waste another minute putting together a slide show of multiplication facts warm-ups for your class...
I’ve done all the work for you with this slide show set – it is ready to go so you can get right down to teaching!
Learning multiplication facts thoroughly and with automaticity is of the utmost importance for students. One of the best ways for us to assist our students is to provide them with ways to practice the tables daily, or at least as close to daily as packed schedules allow.
These slides utilize the facts through to the 12s, as that is what is the norm in Australia. I have left out the 0s and 1s for obvious reasons, but have chosen to keep the 5s, 10s and 11s in the sets; the upper end of those tables being the tricky bits.
Choral recitation may have gone out of fashion, but the truth of it, is that it works!
As part of a comprehensive maths program, these slides will work for you on so many levels. Use them a group at a time (maybe only focus on the 4s for the week, moving on to the 6s the next), or as students are more proficient, bigger chunks or the whole set. The mixed order set is particularly helpful, as students tend to learn things in order only to find they don’t truly know them out of order. When I focus on a particular times table I like to use the mixed order slides, running through those particular slides forwards and then backwards.
Keep the warm-ups on your computer desktop for easy access; they are great to run through if you get caught with a few minutes to spare, especially at the end of the day. The subtle peer pressure the slides encourage is sometimes motivation enough for those reluctant studiers to pursue additional practice at home. I have colour coded the sets to assist in ease of locating a set in isolation.
Vary student response methods to achieve different results: have them say the whole problem and the answer, have them say just the answer as they increase in automaticity, have groups of students say them, or even individuals. On occasion, as a reward (funnily enough), I let the students advance the slides for the class, they feel so important and they love to do this!
I hope you find these as useful as I do, I think the time they save and the results they encourage are worth the price!
