Want to take your multiplication unit to a higher level? Use this multiplication exploration to encourage your students to think critically and communicate their math understanding.

This math exploration focuses on Multiplying Whole Numbers and the place value concepts that are embedded in multiplication. The higher level thinking of this exploration focuses on how place value affects the final product of a 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication problem. Students learn to manipulate numerals to make the largest product and the smallest product. Students develop an understanding of why place value matters.

The scaffolding strategies in this exploration are rich. For example, students respond to the misconceptions of an imaginary student by writing a quick note to them to solidify their knowledge. (great assessment for the teacher!). Later, students write rules for someone attending a carnival where the largest product and smallest product games are being played. Students learn to communicate math ideas precisely through these exercises.

The download contains 11 pgs of questions and scaffolding to display on the smartboard or print off to guide your lessons, 18 1/2 sheets for student math journals, (or for making a booklet), and 11 pgs of information and common core alignment for the teacher. The product contains the question set for explorations, then future questions that can be used for warm ups, classroom discussions, and informal discussions.

5th Grade: CCSS.Math.Content.5.NBT.B5 Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
