These pages use Base 10 Blocks to illustrate the multiplication pattern in whole number place value. Students who have used Base 10 Blocks in earlier grades find these illustrations of the multiplicative nature of place value intuitive – confirming something they already know. We then build on this awareness to illustrate, using Base 10 Blocks, how multiplying multiples of 10 (e.g., 20 × 30, or 30 × 12 ) works.
